In 1948, The Supreme Court ruled that Hollywood Studios could not own theaters. Moreover, the Studios were no longer allowed to only showcase the movies they had originally produced. The Supreme Court, in essence, came down hard on the "System". By the early 1950's, the Studio System had virtually collapsed. Big Hollywood bosses were reaching retirement age. Even Louis B. Mayer was let go from MG, in 1951, due to a conflict between himself and a few co-workers. By the mid-1950's, television had replaced the cinema as America's favorite pass time. By this time, Studios started being used for the production of programming in that medium, which is still the norm today.
Although the "System" had died, the movie industry still managed to rise from the ashes; sometime throughout the 70's and 80's, movies made a comeback! In fact, Hollywood still plays a prominent role in today's entertainment industry.
It is worthy noting that some of today's top Studios; Columbia and Universal, were considered "minor" players during the Hollywood Golden Era. Why is this? A possible explanation for this is: once the Big Five Studios lost most of their control, when the System was basically outlawed, did these "minor" Studios gain that power lost? Or did the Minor Studios learn from the Big Five's mistakes?
All these questions are up for possible debate, however, the BIG QUESTIONS IS:
